Those of you who would like to work with the Cooperative on WGA, lets start by introducing yourself here. As we move forward, we will organization ourselves and this site around teams and projects. Y Worlds does have resources to allocate and has a starting blueprint for you to react to and build upon. We look forward to your involvement. We also look forward to your help in creating applications and code libraries and breakthrough ideas to drive us toward a new way to communicate through a semiotic engine in real time.

I’m cofounder and president of Openworld, a nonprofit volunteer network and consulting practice that specializes in innovative ways of removing barriers to entrepreneurship. I’ve worked in 50+ countries on policy reforms, technology parks, and startup incubators. My main current interests include mapping systems for online collaboration based on patterned storylines (http://is.gd/nfractals), Mind-Body-Spirit coordinate systems for user profiles, virtual games for actual change (http://is.gd/openworldgame), and challenge offers as a way for bootstrap groups to obtain land grants or other enduring asset endowments. I’ve also specialized in free economic zones for knowledge-based industries, and microscholarship initiatives in economically struggling areas. On the home front, I’m active in nonprofit groups (mainly http://ArtisansCourtyard.org) working to improve the local business climate and attract creative ventures to the Shenandoah Valley. I’m also very interested in alternative currencies (http://is.gd/help4nonprofits) and would love to see them integrated in online as well as actual communities. Earlier in my career, I was publisher and managing editor of Reason magazine, and cofounder of the Local Government Center, springboard for Reason Foundation’s privatization practice. I’m a graduate of Harvard University and former Visiting Fellow of the Lehrman Institute, where I researched ways that neighborhood associations can take on municipal service responsibilities.

My name is Brock Dubbels. I am currently part of a work group at McMaster University in the Department of Computing and Software. My training is in Cognitive Psychology, psychophysics, and Social Learning. My current work is on the G-Scale initiative.

      G SCALE
      May 2012 to present
**Identify all of the issues of general user interface relating to usability at different scales for software, then help design (and implement) a set of domain-specific languages which capture the constraints of user-interface features with respect to scale.

**This will be done through emphasis from psychology and user-interface literature. This process is intended to identify cognitive issues relating to scale perception, and capture these in a formal model. Examples: Fitts’ Law, Hick’s Law and the Steering Law, Visual Span, Event Indexing, Embodied Cognition, and Symbolic Representation.

**Identify examples of such concerns, and pre-existing solutions, from existing software which works at multiple scales; put an emphasis on solutions concerning gaming software.

**Relate these models and solutions to design constraints for features in software.

**Embody these design constraint into a set of domain specific languages; and

      **Provide interpreters for these languages.

      CLIR Fellowship
I will also be working with the McMaster Engineering and Science libraries on data management issues. Specifically projects that forge, renovate, and strengthen connections between academic library collections and their users. The program offers scholars the chance to develop new research models, collaborate with information specialists, and explore new career opportunities. Participating libraries benefit from the expertise of accomplished scholars who can invigorate approaches to collection use and teaching, contribute field-specific knowledge, and provide insight into the future of scholarship.

I will be particularly focused on developing structures that promote participation, rather than just interaction. I am very interested in big data sets and how these are curated for a data lifecycle. I am particularly interested in how participation with a data set can help in organizing future usage of the data set, and the discovery process in collecting data for new and unique analysis–beyond the initial intent of the data set.

As an example, I am very interested in how the FoldIt protein folding game has used structured participation to have humans support their computation.

It seems to me that we can develop interesting AI strategies from copying human participatory activity.

      RunMyCode Fellow

I will also be evangelizing for RunMyCode

      http://www.runmycode.org/CompanionSite/

I am also the Chair of the Research Group at the Serious Games Association.

I am very interested in creating interfaces that learn from users. The area of lifelogging, AI, and mining participatory culture for metadata is of great interest.

My intent is to apply these interests to discovery for big data sets.

Hey would you mind sharing which blog platform you’re working with? I’m looking to start my own blog in the near future but I’m having a hard time selecting between BlogEngine/Wordpress/B2evolution and Drupal. The reason I ask is because your layout seems different then most blogs and I’m looking for something unique. P.S Apologies for getting off-topic but I had to ask!

This area is where we work on the strategy for the technological development of Visual Y. Join Working Group Alpha (WGA) as we tackle the blueprint, controls, patterns and back end of our modeling system. We will be developing using JavaScript, HTML5/CSS3/Canvas, Generative Audio, Node.js, WebGL, and NoSQL databases such as MongoDB. Contributions do not only have to consist of code or contributions to the software engine. We are looking for a rich mix of both concept and tech – for the best ideas and the best ways to harness software, hardware, visual and auditory meaning, generative GUI, color, movement, human perception, cognition and more.

We think our current language is inadequate to address the complex nature of the world around us. We are bound to an inherited language that has limited our capacity to process the ever-evolving landscape of information.

We are going to try to solve a problem that lies at the very core of the human condition – communication. As a result of our technological evolution we have the ability to create a new language, built from the ground up to organize and deliver complex, systemic knowledge using semiotics-on-demand: Visual Y.

Visual Y is a browser-based interactive modeling system; a generative engine that creates interactive visualizations in real-time. This enables us to organize and employ new data sets anywhere at any time, establishing models, relationships, and exchanges among variables and across ontologies. It does not store and retrieve videos; it does not store massive amounts of data. Visual Y is distributed computing.

We are a Cooperative that believes everyone should be rewarded for their contributions based upon the scale, quality and impact of those contributions. We will be working together in teams focused on solving particular challenges. Join Working Group Alpha to help us construct this language of complexity.

    Visual Y

Visual Y is our system of knowledge visualization.
    Visual Y consists of:

    • a systemic computer based hardware and software architecture capable of running large scale, interactive, real time, generative modeling worlds via a web browser
    • a generative engine capable of supporting coders, designers, editors and end users
    • an immersive visual approach to generative programming that enables a pattern builder to use design tools to craft the desired multivariate pattern in real time, onscreen. The implemented patterns, static or dynamic, then automatically generate sets and subsets of code segments that are stored and tagged in a knowledge/code model. The code is the database or references a database table. A pattern time sequence is not a stored movie.  It is a real time browser based code set launched through interactive controls.
We think that for any topic there are fixed families of known variables that must be considered for a comprehensive understanding of that topic. Those known variables at the highest planes of understanding form foundation models – portal maps.
We think that each variable in a family should be fixed in space, holding a particular spatial position among the other variables depicted in the model. We call each variable a cell. A cell is a fixed pixel set that can be controlled according to a uniform wiring architecture.
Visual Y is the complete toolset, engine and process that drives the patterns of meaning that form within each cell (variable), that describe the attributes of the variable, and the relationships and exchanges among the variables. The code, cell models and propagating patterns across time all contain complex knowledge conveyed to the end user.
Here is our starting outline for a Visual Y Blueprint:

    developer
    functionality
    knowledge representation
fixed cellular models of system and subsystem ontologies
    embedded patterns
    real time WYSIWYG visualization engine
    engine controls
    generative code
    proof process validation
    knowledge accumulation

    user
    functionality
    knowledge representation portal maps
    knowledge representation
    visual portal navigation
    screen window customization
    perspective views
    drill down detail
    proof process validation

The engine and resulting map forms should be oriented around the following user objectives:

    • Understand
    • Make a Decision
    • Contribute
    • Exchange
    • Experience
    • Community
    • Proofs
    • Stimulation
The engine and resulting map forms should be oriented around the following not mutually exclusive perspective views:

    • Spatial
    • Time
    • Cause/Effect
    • Flow
    • Systems
    • Decision
    • Knowledge
    • Validity
    • Science
    • Human Centric Constructs
The knowledge engine will be driven by ontological models and  semiotic sister models (not strictly by words). The engine should be extremely easy to use, should allow easy navigation across numerous perspective and objective views, should be generative across all media forms (particularly visual and sound) and should use these and other patterns to depict knowledge:

    • Spatial Positioning within a model
    • Shapes & Forms
    • Color & Texture & Intensity & Patterns
    • Lighting & Contrast
    • Strings & Fibers and Fabric
    • Flow, movement, pulse, generative time based change
    • Physics Attributes such as Gravity, Polarity, Momentum, Randomness
    • Sound
Pattern can be used to represent the following knowledge with and among model variables:Forms of Matter & Energy Systems
    Forms of Human ConstructsStates
    ChangesFunctionality
    Cause and Effect
    Exchanges
    Systemic Relationships
    Programming
    In Play/Activated

    Time
    Space
    Environment

Speed, Momentum, Acceleration, Fluidity, Perturbation, Connectivity
    Size, Shape, Position

    And much more…

Hello and welcome to our first iteration of…

Hello and welcome to our first iteration of a visualization engine. Y Worlds believes an engine capable of building interactive worlds is the breakthrough necessary to address complexity and deep systemic browsable knowledge. You are among a small number of people we are asking to experience and experiment with Visual Y.Version 1. The application has been developed and coded by two brave and compassionate coders – Luke Stanley and Alex Petherick-Brian with help from Jack Swanson. We all realize that with our limited time and resources, the version you receive is not yet what we imagine and need, yet it is a substantial step in the right direction. Please take some time to imagine for yourself how Visual Y can someday become our new language for complexity and meaning. Once we hear from you, we will make the engine public. While Y Worlds offers many writings about the limitations of language when it comes to systems and complexity (these are available throughout our website) here is a quick summary of just what we believe the toolset you are receiving is capable of:

    a) Meaning

The challenge with systems and complexity is not finding data and plotting the data elegantly so that meaning can be extracted. The big challenge is to synthesize all that we know and do not know about a complex multivariate topic into a form that instantly translates the noise into meaningful, useful, actionable and valid signal. A branch of that challenge is to tell a resonant story that helps convey the meaning – which can include all forms of multimedia. Another branch of the challenge is to absolutely design a solution set that meets the N number of possible specific objectives of the user. If disease is the topic, for example, one will either want to know how disease works, how to prevent it, how to treat it, or how to live with it across a few possible perspectives – macro to micro, viewpoint (doctor, patient, planner, family member etc.).

    b) Cognition

Humans are wired by genetic programming and by life experience to extract knowledge and meaning from the world into a format they can remember and act upon. Most of us are very well wired for visual processing (movement, pattern, change, color, form etc.) and for audio processing (tone, pattern, change etc.). We believe meaning can be best conveyed through pattern. Not lots of lines and variables in a mess across a screen. Not lots of lists and outlines. Not lots of data graphics. Not storyboard summary mind maps although we believe they are valuable and on the right track. We believe pattern can best be processed if there is a simple common language framework for pattern to operate within. Our patterns are a limited number of specific colors, the movements and dynamics of paintbrush strokes, and the connectivity of the strokes across time and space.

    c) The proposed Visual Y Process:

    1) First identify small ontological groupings (4-12 variables at most) that hold together as the representational constructs for a particular topic and focus. There can be many such groupings at many levels and perspectives. And there need never be just one instantiation – we encourage alternative or edited versions and let the ones that work best become widely adopted. Each ontological group is a model-set, a construct set, that identifies the highest level variables of a particular topic and perspective view. These model-sets are created by drawing cells (depicting each variable) in such a way that they are shaped uniquely according to the language (round for living, triangular for proofs etc.), they connect to each other in a manner consistent with their interrelationships and exchanges (no lines connect one to the other – they are understood to be connected if they are in the model-set). Every cell will have subcells and subcells of subcells as necessary to show the layers of detail (we do not yet have a 3D layered version to show you). Our job is to light up the cells to show for any topic and situation which cells are active and to what degree (objective 1), which cells are interacting according to intensity, direction, timeframe, cause/effect (objective 2), which cells should be characterized according to function and state (2 reds for very poor and poor, a single grey for neutral, and 2 blues for very good or good (objective 3), which cells are composed of fully validated knowledge (2 greens) or (unvalidated knowledge (2 yellows) (objective 4).

    2) Imagine the system of Visual Y
You create a model by drawing it. You show order, sequence, relationship, activation, good/bad and validation. Each cell and each drawn element is data, code, and knowledge with automatic links and tags based upon how you draw it. Every source of information and knowledge contributing to every mark in the model is tracked and part of the database for instant reference (we do not have this function coded yet). Every edit of every model is recorded and documented. A curator oversees the entire dynamic system of knowledge creation and adaptation. A proof process, the actual visual documentation of the derivation of every model, is created using triangular forms and inextricably tied to what is produced based upon the proofs and validations. There can be scores of model-sets, sitting side by side. There can be zooms into the detail of each model-set, you can drill down from the macro to micro or from one perspective view to the other. Ultimately these model-sets will be integrated into a big bold beautiful world that operates like a video game.

What Visual Y is trying to offer is a simple solution to the complex problem of how to manage complexity. Our answer is to create bite-size interlinked knowledge maps that carry the meaning desired by the user through their depiction of patterns within fixed universal representational ontological model-sets. Your pre-built models become reference for complex topics, and ultimately become the high level understandings that carry high value meaning – leaving the detail and derivations just below the surface yet instantly accessible.

You can download the Visualization Engine for Mac OS here and for Windows here. You will then need to open the downloaded file and install the Engine on your computer. Once installed you can open the Engine and begin to create your own models. Our Quick Cell Concussion model will always open as a default, to clear this model click the clear button- . A more detailed guide to all of the tools and keyboard shortcuts is included below.

You can view all of the models that have been saved by anyone here – they are ordered chronologically. You can open or import each model into the Visualization Engine by clicking the appropriate link. ‘Open’ will open the selected model into the Visualization Engine and will erase any of your previous work (if there is any). ‘Import’ will load the selected model into your current model-set. You can also play the model by clicking the appropriate link. From here you can share this page with anyone or download the model as an .mp4 file by right clicking on the movie and selecting ‘Save As.’ You can also download the Engine on the bottom of any model page. We recommend using Google Chrome to access the models page.

So, try drawing an 8 cell model that represents something. Fill the cells with pattern to tell a story about how the cells work. Run the story, save it, share it and try again. And imagine this is a truly pioneering approach that as with all new paradigms may require considerable effort to keep an open and inquiring mind.

You can use this Playground- Working Group Alpha Playground to communicate freely about the Engine among yourselves and with us. You will need to register as a member of Y Worlds in order to use the playground. As a note, we have spent more time testing the Mac OS version of the Engine and less on the Windows version so please excuse any errors or bugs you come across, and please let us know when any errors or bugs occur.

For technical questions or feedback you can contact Jack Swanson: jack@yworlds.com, 612.567.0123. Or Skype us at (j.swan.) to discuss any aspect of the engine – technical or conceptual.

Thank you for your thoughtful consideration of our first step toward dynamic viz.

I am adding this because “Since every brand has to Go Social, every brand needs a map or a path. This Google World visual is that map or path because it inspires people to consider how their strategy fits in with Google and how Google’s strategy fits in with theirs, their rivals and the rest of the world.”

What do we all think about this, how do we relate to it/does it relate to us? Does it make sense for us to use a similarly structured diagram to illustrate our aspirations in a simple cohesive manner, even if only among ourselves as an orienting general overview map of the unfolding terrain we intend to develop?

    Tags: application, semiotics, synaesthesia

Some reflections on a creative brainstorm I had with Dan last night. We could create, in the form of a multi platform application, deceptively simple yet immensely powerful tool/toy to enhance individual’s capacity to appreciate greater depth and subtlety of sensory experience and cause-effect relationships.

The idea looks like a sound activated, fluid, dynamic, responsive animated image (sound, light, shape and colour) rendering screen filler. Using one’s voice to sing to your mobile app, for instance, would allow you to create and record a multi-dimensional sound and animated image-scape. This simple interface could open the possibility for some profound state experiences, much as do the dance parties so popular with many folks, and make available access to deeper levels of insight and intuition simply because of the precision of the rendering of a type of spontaneous semiotic synaesthesia. The sharing of these multimedia files could open possibilities for folk to inspire and uplift each other in simple yet powerful ways.

Underneath the bonnet, sound, colour and movement are related through proven resonances using the mathematics of wavelength correlations and complex geometry.

This is a first pass at the idea, which I feel holds exciting potential – comments?

I found this earlier today, something which may be a good lead in the game of trying to reinvent digital communication.

Emotion-On-Demand Plug In For Virtual Characters – http://www.technologyreview.com/view/507786/psychologists-release-emotion-on-demand-plug-in-for-virtual-characters/

Another vision I had recently has to do with Dance Notation. Not sure what others might know about Dance Notation, but it’s something I’ve kept a close eye on for the last decade or so. Here are some examples of things that might inspire the next generation interface..

      http://www.credo-interactive.com/products/danceforms/index.html

      http://www.movement-notation.org/

      http://www.ewmncenter.com/133376/Movement-Notation-1-1-1

      http://dancewriting.org/

      http://tapdancenotation.com/KahnotationPage.html

      http://donhe.topcities.com/pubs/led.html

      http://user.uni-frankfurt.de/~griesbec/LABPADE.HTML

My reasoning comes from my deep understanding of arts & culture as well as writing systems. I understand how humans would come up with proto-writing systems. I have the uncanny ability of putting myself in that state, of being an early human. I can abstract away my life experience, my contact with modern technologies, etc., and experience, like many others can and do, the fundamentally human experience of just being-human.

My interest in Dance Notation has nothing to do with dancing. It has to do with a 3-dimensional plane where movements can be transcribed. That’s all. It’s the ability of transcribing movements in space, a body’s movements, onto paper so others can read it.

My vision of the perfect interface would involve a 3D timeline where I could watch a short animation of some fundamental human experience. Say someone communicates to me, through the interface, his or her “Experience of purchasing cigarettes at the store”. I could watch a 15-25 second animation over a 3-dimensional plane, of the movements involved, the individual’s movements. Then in another module, I could watch an animation of the different changes in facial aspect, affect, you know, all the important information, facial expressions, posture, non-verbal language, proxemics information, i.e. distance between individual and other objects or persons and so on.

That way, visually, I could “grasp” an entire experience.. I could play it back, I could perhaps see the individual’s annotations, share my own annotations.. Then all you need is an easy way for people to make these short animations.. and then you could catalogue the entirety of human experiences.. all categorized, with a faceted search interface so you can navigate/browse the “Human Experience Genome” collection..

But forget eye-candy, I have an overwhelming feeling that people are going for eye-candy, when eye-candy should never be the first step in the development of something like this. Specification first, look & feel later..

I also think creativity and creative expression should not be the first goals for the interface. First, I think you want a system like a writing system or simple communication technology.. You want to be able to use it so communicate certain things.. once you have the framework, the specification, you can build a prototype, and later on you can get people to test it, and then people can have a field day expressing themselves creatively.. but for me the basic design questions have nothing to do with creative self-expression.. you’re buiding a technology that, yes, is designed to support an endless number, endless flow of states, experiences, communications, etc.. but your design goal is to make it very open and extensible.. and if you focus on eye-candy early on, it will blind you.. so most of what I’ve seen so far is pure eye-candy, it’s fun for the first 5 minutes and then grows old and boring.. it outlives its utility rather quickly.. I personally go back to using an actual pad of paper and a pencil rather quickly after testing eye-candy-rich apps like that.. or video demos, I watch them and it makes me feel something for about 5 minutes, then I go back to reality..

Also, does anyone actually have a need for this thing? Did people express that they needed this thing? Does anyone really need it, or is it just what the designers need? That may be great, the desire may be great, but in the long-term it will have zero viability if it doesn’t answer a basic human need..

Sorry if I sound like an ass, I’m just here to check that dreaming stays connected to physical reality. Or else if what people want is eye-candy, then give them LSD instead of building a new technology.. buy a bunch of LSD in bulk and give it to people.. they will have super eye-candy experiences and do lots of multidimensional multisensory communicating.. 😉

@antiface I certainly wouldn’t count out creative expression and interactive eye-candy. Whatever we end up designing with be compelling and attractive, because it has to be. At this point we’re simply tossing around ideas.

As you know at YWorlds we’re going to “invent and teach the world to use a universal high level visual language to represent complexity across barriers of language, culture and inherited linearity.” Expressing emotions with our voices and in dance with sensors that may recognize and annotate the inputs and transform them into soundscapes and visualizations that evoke a capacity to communicate more fluidly, not just with each other, but with machines. Who knows?

        Consider this: http://www.ted.com/talks/view/lang/en//id/1110

And what Thomas W. Malone from the MIT Center for Collective Intelligence recently wrote:

… we’re also trying to understand the science behind the deeper phenomena of humans working together or humans and computers working together in ways that will help us understand how to create new kinds of human or human and computer cooperatives or collective intelligences.”

        http://edge.org/conversation/collective-intelligence

Thanks for your response, Alex. I liked the article re: the emotion on demand plugin. Ttyl.

What stimulating ideas! My quick response to the google map, and any other effort of its kind, is that it must be created and understood through its objectives. The objective of google appears to be to make money for its shareholders by utilizing large scale unpaid societal contributions and its technologies to make markets and products and services that it can dominate and monetarize. Y Worlds has as its objectives nurture, equality, truth and systems. These principles take us in a different direction. Y Worlds is developing it full up business plan right now and it will have, does have today, a simple set of models that guide us. And we are designed to be self generative – we create amazing mixes of people and resources and nutrients and environments and let them flourish and benefit and share with the world.

Regarding semiotics, we believe the essence of what we want to do revolves around objectives, meaning, value, autopoeisis, pattern (both aesthetic and highly effective), and creative expression based upon a core foundation of a new and better language to address complexity and systems and multiple variables moving in space and time. If we stick with meaning and value for a moment, consider anything and deconstruct it into the small set of meanings and values that you want to either extract or communicate or organize. Our challenge is evolve a new system that is compelling, that works, that is creator/user oriented, and that delivers meaning at the desired level. There will be massive room for robust, creative interpretation – but within a relatively simply new language of color, shape, pattern, motion within fixed cellular ontological models that are robust, scalable and adaptable.

Capturing representational sensory experiences, cause and effect meanings, movement across space and time, all are integral to the approach we have in mind. It is a meld of a universal base semiotic language, powerful tools for creative expression and representation and organization and database/rerieval.

We image real time browser based generative engines that eventually become rich video game like worlds. There is no reason we cannot today build such a beast that offers a form of computer aided life that is rich with expression, meaning and intimate communication. Alan

    WHAT IS CIRCOS?

THIS IS A NICE DATA VISUALIZATION TOOL THAT IS OPEN SOURCE.

    CIRCULAR VISUALIZATION
Circos is a software package for visualizing data and information. It visualizes data in a circular layout — this makes Circos ideal for exploring relationships between objects or positions. There are other reasons why a circular layout is advantageous, not the least being the fact that it is attractive.

Circos is ideal for creating publication-quality infographics and illustrations with a high data-to-ink ratio, richly layered data and pleasant symmetries. You have fine control each element in the figure to tailor its focus points and detail to your audience.

▴ Images created with Circos, illustrating links, ribbons, tiles and a variety of 2D data tracks. If it’s round, Circos can probably do it (more images).
Circos is flexible. Although originally designed for visualizing genomic data, it can create figures from data in any field. If you have data that describes relationships or multi-layered annotations of one or more scales, Circos is for you.

Circos can be automated. It is controlled by plain-text configuration files, which makes it easily incorporated into data acquisition, analysis and reporting pipelines (a data pipeline is a multi-step process in which data is analyzed by multiple and typically independent tools, each passing their output as the input to the next step).

here is what could be a valuable resource for the initial design phase http://mapbox.com/ written in node.js

This is a great resource. Since we are moving into an enterprise mode, resources should be placed in a well organized reference section, BUT, more importantly, specific resources, concepts and solutions that we want to incorporate into our enterprise need to be called out and put into planning and implementation that become our new world. If you our team members think this is the best geographic mapping tool out there, and we should use it, then lets decide and use it whenever we want to do geographic mapping. Just finding the best tool out there is very valuable. This is a nice find. One of us needs to check out the others and see if this is reference or should be put into action. Best, Alan

another is CartoDB (http://cartodb.com/), along with the map CSS markup language they’ve created, CartoCSS, also used by MapBox.

I use Trello regularly, it’s a good pick. You should be able to invite me to the “Organization”. You can have boards and can create “Organizations”. Anyway I’m not sure how to use Trello collaboratively, in any case this is my profile on Trello. https://trello.com/alexgagnon

    • antiface 10:12 pm on November 15, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Just a note as I wait for details. I’ve been using Trello for a while as well as numerous other apps in the same category. Trello will not solve all our problems. It can greatly improve workflow, it’s a great little tool, but in and of itself, it won’t help unless used properly.

Trello works with Boards and Cards. A Board has Cards, and Cards can be in one of three categories/columns on the page: TO DO, DOING, and DONE. That essentially makes it a Kanban Board. The three columns are meant to give visual control over projects, processes, etc.

There can be many Boards, though, each with many Cards. A Card has a description, can be given Labels, it can be Assigned to different Members, you can add a Checklist, you can assign a Due Date, Attach Files, and then people can Comment on them indefinitely..

For Trello to do its job, everyone needs to use it, and use it regularly. If we are not disciplined in our use of Trello, it won’t help at all, and might even make things worse. Just a suggestion, if we start using Trello, it should be the first thing we open in the morning, it should be opened all day long, and be the last thing we check before going to bed.

Personally, I’m using my own Kanban-like Boards in my office, physical boards, real boards above my actual desk. Oh and you can add Lists to Boards too.. but anyway I probably won’t be using the Trello Board(s) all that much because I’m not sure yet what my role can or would or will be within the greater Y World project. Anyway just letting you know that Trello, like all tools, may be great and wonderful and all that, but only if used regularly and used efficiently. The tool itself is never the answer to your problems. It is a tool, nothing more, nothing less.

Thanks Alex, you are correct, for us to get things done we need to treat what we are building as a priority and the tool as a workspace we all inhabit and refer to, communicating effectively and reliably.

    • ddrrnt 5:40 am on November 16, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Thanks for the rundown, @antiface. I look forward to giving it a shot, @gd. I do enjoy the PLAYGROUND for communication though. IF you find me on Trello @ddrrnt, then add me. Cheers,

      • gd 2:34 pm on November 16, 2012 Permalink | Reply

Yes @ddrrnt the playground is vital and all the workflows and their resolutions, as well as discussions around them should still be shared here, it’s just that this wordpress system is not up to project management capacity IMO – perhaps future iterations of the y-worlds platform will build in that capability, meanwhile, to get things done, there is a creative brainstorm in a google doc and a growing trello wireframe which should be in a shareworthy state soon.

@aay here is John Ringland’s site http://www.anandavala.info/index.html that i mentioned that @gd introduced me to … i have barely started exploring the material but have found more than enough to spark my curiosity. maybe we can all meet for a discussion sometime

Seth, a simple visual representation of the concept of symbolism may help us orient ourselves in preparation for exploring the more complex area of semiotics, here is a diagram that John created a while back that informs this area at the level of symbology http://allisasis.com/cybershaman/symbolism-101/

Tags: RDF semantic linked-data collective intelligence visualization

There is a very interesting conversation going on at the FB P2P group page.

An excerpt by Poor Richard: “I am imagining a semantic ontology according to which the key ideas and data of this content could be parsed and tagged to form a distributed database using semantic linked-data structures. This would help transition the collective knowledge base of the research, activist, and social entrepreneurial communities into a machine-readable, semantically linked, searchable form.”

And another one, most releavant here: “Another part of the “research information system” I am visioneering is pattern detection and recognition. An ontology gives us a set of semantically charged patterns. Then what we need is a pattern language with which to parse existing content and match it with our ontology. I am thinking of something like the “regular expressions” used in the old unix text editors or in the Pearl and Awk programming languages I once used.”

Now, I have been thinking a while around such ideas. Ontology (e.g. using OWL) as proposed academically has some drawbacks, as it would imply everybody to share and adopt the same ontology. This looks rather difficult.

Without going too much into details, I have been imagining some very different approach. By my observation, collective intelligence works best when it is decoupled in time and space – distributed. As an example, as a bread job I have been implementing a web site recently. For all the pieces I could not immediately find a solution, I browsed the web and found the information I need – from PHP details, to CSS, to javascript. That is standard practice developing and collective intelligence at best.

Another great example is twitter. At its heart are short messages. Like lego pieces. It’s then up to minds to actually mesh-up tweets, make links, etc.

So I am imagining an approach similar to this instead of some kind of platform for a next step. We already know the power of folksonomies, and there are great tools like Diigo out there. The problem is these are non-linked data with limited capabilities for harnessing.

I am thinking of a tagging folksonomy approach which would enrich or publish data to RDF. Having RDF data we than can re-map all this data semantically. We can tag data with geo-tags, and visualize them on maps. They can be tagged in other forms to visualize differently (e.g. connections between projects, groups, etc.). We can tag videos and pictures to make them searchable, etc. People could come up with countless new ways of visualizing data – where Visual Y would pick up…

Interested in opinions if this makes sense. Thanks for reading.

BTW, this reminds me that IEML http://ieml.org could be considered an alternative to RDF in some cases, although RDF could be used as a data format for expressing it, or in combination with arbitrary RDF URI’s

      Greets, tawhuac

I’m glad you picked up on that P2P fb thread. There’s more on this topic in the Next Net and Global Survival Google Groups, and I’ve also been tossing it around with folks at the W3C Read Write Web Community Group and various mail lists.

The trouble with folksonomies like you get from diigo or the like is no category/subcategory organization. You might impose this later, perhaps, but after the fact the semantic relationships between tags are not as clear as when you first assign them to a tweet, web page, link or whatever. I may be wrong about this, but it seems important at this point.

Using Diigo as an example, it has some great features, not the least of which is poping its tagging dialog up in whatever your active window may be and automatically capturing the url, etc for you.

What Diigo and other similar apps don’t do:

      1. let you access your entire existing folksonomy, alphabetized, in the dialog box or auto-complete if you manually type a tag. So you wind up with many variants of the essentially the same tag.

      2. let you hierarchically group tags into categories or sub categories, and define those on the fly

      3. let you define crosslinks between tags, categories, and subcategories (tags and subcategories may relate to more than one main category)

      4. they don’t publish the data to RDF or some linked-data format.

      What do you folks think?

        Thanks for responding Richard!

The trouble with folksonomies like you get from diigo or the like is no category/subcategory organization.

Well that’s exactly the point of tagging, to get rid of categorization, because you’ll never get the categorization right. Tagging allows multi-dimensional categorization, and a simple search by tag is in fact a “click” on a category, so this

        2. let you hierarchically group tags into categories or sub categories, and define those on the fly

thus doesn’t seem like someting I’d want to have…
The key in your comment, and the point why I was writing the post, is exactly this:

What Diigo and other similar apps don’t do:

Which however we could do here using RDF or similar semantic approaches.
And then visualize the data. 🙂

I’ve utilized a syndication plugin for WordPress into which diigo RSS can be fed and content categorized and sub-categorized to our heart’s content.

@aay We could set up a space to aggregate bookmarks from Diigo. I’d suggest that we have a conversation surrounding the YWorld’s preferred folksonomy, if there isn’t one already.

Stephanie LeMieux has some intriguing ideas on a hybrid approach to folksonomies and taxonomies (slide 18 onwards) at http://www.slideshare.net/Earley/hybrid-approaches-to-taxonomy-folksonmy … useful for YWorlds?

      hi tawhuac,

i’ve been researching the semantic web and structuring meaning through ontologies, folksonomies, folksontological approaches, IEML, gamification of semantic tagging, and also the data analysis side of it.

i’ve also been sort of prototyping graph networks manually using a tool called Compendium for many years, and we just launched a collaborative platform inspired in part by that. check out metamaps.cc.

it is our imagining of how these nebulous infocologies can be mapped and traveled.

Basically we want to give you the ability to create and navigate knowledge networks fluidly, and build up both structured and unstructured relations. it is in its infancy but i’d like to collaborate with both you and others here on building knowledge networks.

definitely open to talk about the rationale and reasoning behind design, and the feedback map also has some good insights.

if you’d like an invite, i can post the invite code to this community. there are also others in yworlds who can invite you as well 🙂

p.s. we are doing this from an integrative commons-based approach.

Ishan, definitively very interested and thanks for the open invitation, appreciated. I checked metamaps.cc, and I like the navigational and the filtering elements very much, albeit failing to see the collaborative platform part in it so far. Unfortunately I lack skills in 3D development yet, but I could also picture traversing “nebolous infocologies” in 3D virtual space…

yeah, we haven’t yet built the feature to share maps, but if you do create public or commons topics, those can be seen and linked to by everyone else on the platform.

you can go to http://metamaps.cc/users/new and use the invite code: 1ak3xvjq
